NOW UNCANCELLED: the Linux workshop
Because no true Linux hacker ever leaves their basement anyway, and because Thom needs to figure out how to teach remotely, COVID-19 isn't going to stop this workshop!
We will slightly adjust the contents of this workshop to accomodate running it on your own computer, in a Ubuntu virtual machine. Thom is going to be doing some form of live streaming, and following the example of the OOP course we'll (probably) have a Discord to help each other through any problems we're experiencing.
Because we, in this adjusted setting, will be running on (virtual) machines that you do manage, we will also touch some minor systems administration items.
If you sign up for this workshop, we expect you to do a little bit of prep beforehand. Instructions will be mailed on Tuesday at the latest. The workshop will happen at the same time as scheduled, just online now.
Old text follows:
Do you associate black screens with green text on them with the hacker known as 4chan? Is the first thing you do when the lab computer booted Linux rebooting the PC to your Windows safe space? Do you panic whenever you see cmd.exe? And are you taking Hacking in C soon?
Then this command line boot camp is probably a good idea. As a good prep for the course Hacking in C, the teacher of that course will show you how to get around on the command line, how to manage your files, how to run programs, how to compile C code without an IDE and we will briefly cover I/O and the environment. We might even show you how to exit the Vim editor.
This workshop is aimed at first-year students who have never really touched any command line before. It is recommended, but not required, for Hacking in C. If you have done any intermediate-level stuff in Windows .bat files, or know what `cd` and `ls` are, you are possibly already overqualified. If you know how `grep`, `find` and/or pipes work, you are definitely overqualified.
We will not cover doing admin stuff, not even apt-get or sudo. We will run everything on lab computers and network, so you do not even need to bring their own laptop or VM. You will need your Science-account to log in on the Linux environment, so make sure you have it. You may try logging in at diy.science.ru.nl to check if you remember your password.
