Embark on Your Journey to Success in Data Science

Are you currently pursuing a Master's degree in Data Science and looking to take the next step in your data science journey? Our Graduate Program in Data Science offers you a range of compelling opportunities, as well as dedicated guidance from start to finish.

About Us

The BlueConic Data Science team is responsible for helping our clients get more out of their customer data, for example, by training custom machine learning models. Working with the data of some of the biggest brands in the world brings a lot of interesting challenges and allows us to use a broad range of different data science techniques.

About the internship

We offer Data Science, Computer Science or AI students the possibility to do a research internship or thesis project (as part of the Master curriculum) on an internal project at the Data Science team here at BlueConic.

Subjects we are interested in include:

  • Similarity search techniques for probabilistic matching.
  • Contextual multi-arm bandit algorithms.
  • Clustering algorithms to discover interesting segments.
  • Causal inference / uplift modelling algorithms to improve targeting ROI.
  • Predicting customer intent (e.g. likelihood to buy) from on-site behavior.
  • Bayesian methods (e.g., improved CLV models)

While the above ideas should give you an impression of the various avenues we’re looking to explore, we are always happy to discuss other ideas as well!

You will be a great fit if you

  • Are studying Data Science, AI, Computer Science, Informatics, or related (university or hbo).
  • Have experience with Python and Python Data Science libraries like Scikit-learn.
  • Embody BlueConic's values in spades: Grit. Humility. Collaboration. Intellectual curiosity. Passion. Accountability.
  • Are eager to support the creation of the best marketing technology product in the world.
  • Don’t ever think ‘good enough’ is good enough.

At Picnic, we’re revolutionizing the way people buy groceries with our affordable and sustainable app-only service. We do almost everything in-house, developing cutting-edge technologies and processes to ensure we continue to grow rapidly without missing a beat. If you’re a passionate Data Scientist, we’re offering you the opportunity to join the diverse team at our Amsterdam HQ and make a real difference in our data-driven, scale-up environment. We are currently seeking talented individuals across various levels of expertise.

🥜 In a nutshell
As a Data Scientist at Picnic, you’ll work on creating intelligent, automated systems to solve our company’s biggest challenges, at scale. You won’t stop at building a model—you’ll productionize it alongside the wide variety of machine learning models we already have running in production.

Working closely with business leads, you’ll identify and solve problems leveraging machine learning. When working with our Inbound team, you’ll work on improving the Temporal Fusion Transformer model that predicts demand on the article level—a direct input for our ordering system. With our Payment team you could work on our real-time payment fraud detection system— to ensure we block intentional fraud, not happy customers. You’re more than a model builder: you’re a blend of internal consultant, software engineer, and applied mathematician.

You might think, ‘Sounds good, but 80% of my job is going to be cleaning data.’ Not here. Our data is registered, logged, consistent, and immaculate. We’re a mature team with the infrastructure, tools, and expertise to get models into production.

Check out some of our previous machine learning projects here: https://blog.picnic.nl/tagged/machine-learning

- Recommendation systems: generating useful in-app grocery suggestions for our customers
- Search and ranking:  helping our customers find exactly what they need
- Predicting delivery drop-off times for our distribution: making sure we’re on-time at every customer.

You will definitely:

- Work closely with business leads to identify opportunities, define business cases, and scope out the requirements
- Own your own project from inception to production, to continuous improvement
-Develop tools and enhancements for our cloud-based data science platform

💻 Technologies we use
- Python (Scikit-learn, PyTorch, Tensorflow, FastAPI - or we build our own packages)

With the ever increasing size of software systems, we see that many new software systems are distributed. Web-scale-architecture, event-driven, reactive, actor and eventual consistency are all software architectural styles and concepts that imply distributed computing.

Infrastructure as code is one of the foundations of the new wave of web scale software systems. The infrastructure of the software systems dynamically reconfigures itself to react to the demands on the system as a whole. The system can decide to instantiate new instances of a sub component, reroute requests or build a complete copy of itself in another location. These new capabilities can have unspecified interactions with the running software itself and have undesired and unexpected results. This is called emergent behavior, behavior not explicitly build into the system. As part of our ambition to build and maintain quality software systems we feel that infrastructure as code should be part of our solution architecture and we should have the same quality guarantees as the rest of the system.

To reason about these architectures we want to perform static analysis on their configuration, allowing us to detect possible issues (bottlenecks, conflicting changes, implausible values, etc.) at an early stage before running in production.

G-Research is Europe’s leading quantitative finance research firm. We hire the brightest minds in the world to tackle some of the biggest questions in finance. We pair this expertise with machine learning, big data, and some of the most advanced technology available to predict movements in financial markets.

The role

Typically, G-Research hires PhD-level mathematicians and gives them access to extensive data and an advanced platform to enable them to predict movements in financial markets.

But we are looking to change things up. We are hiring an experienced Quantitative Analyst with strong knowledge of financial markets and solid understanding of data interrogation and the mathematical principles underpinning this.

Using your financial knowledge and analytical skills, you will help to build mathematical models of price movements based on a broad array of data inputs.

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking individuals with a passion for, and keen interest in, financial markets. The ideal candidate will have solid quantitative and computing skills, backed up by a strong background in fundamental equity research.

In particular, we want to hear from highly motivated candidates with the following skills and experience:

  • Knowledge of financial markets from a strong career background in fundamental equity research
  • Some coding ability or the motivation to rapidly learn

  • Lunch provided (via Just Eat for Business) and dedicated barista bar
  • 30 days’ annual leave
  • 9% contributory pension scheme
  • Informal dress code and excellent work/life balance
  • Comprehensive healthcare and life assurance
  • Cycle-to-work scheme
  • Monthly company events

G-Research is committed to cultivating and preserving an inclusive work environment. We are an ideas-driven business and we place great value on diversity of experience and opinions.

We want to ensure that applicants receive a recruitment experience that enables them to perform at their best. If you have a disability or special need that requires accommodation please let us know in the relevant section.
