Lunch lecture Thales

The field of Machine Learning, a subset of Artificial Intelligence, has a body of knowledge that is formed within machine learning communities and academic works. This field exists with well-defined algorithms, data structures, and theories of learning. The goal of machine learning is to use statistical techniques to give a computer the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed; i.e., progressively improve a systems ability to perform the specific task it was initially designed for. Evolved from the study of pattern recognition and computational learning theory, machine learning explores the study and construction of algorithms that can learn from, and make predictions on, data. However, as more machine learning applications, such as virtual personal assistants and social media services, are developed everyday, naval applications are mostly absent.

After a short introduction on Thales and the presenter, the lunch meeting will touch upon the basic concepts of machine learning and its possible application within the naval domain. Secondly, it will show problems of applying machine learning algorithms and techniques in naval applications, and finally, the ethical question that should be asked when researching in the field of machine learning will be discussed, especially in the naval domain.
