Thirona is a high-tech company specialized in automated medical image analysis. We were founded in 2014 by Eva van Rikxoort and Bram van Ginneken, both scientists at the Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Our vision is that the gap between academic developments in medical image analysis and clinical useability needs to be bridged by creating products that include the latest technologies but at the same time are intuitive for the user and aid medical specialists in their daily tasks.

Who we are
Since its establishment in 2014, Thirona has quickly grown from a real start-up with two employees to a well-established company with over 30 employees. We have developed three software products focusing on the analysis of thoracic CT scans (LungQ), chest X-rays (CAD4TB), and retinal images (RetCAD). Additionally, Thirona offers a certified image analysis service delivering accurate and repeatable measurements from medical images.

Clinical trials and research
Our deep learning based analysis tools are extensively used in pharmacological and biotechnological trials. Sophisticated quantitative measures for lung diseases like COPD, Asthma, Cystic Fibrosis, ILD, and COVID-19 can provide valuable insights into disease progression and drug response. Thirona is also actively involved in the academic community and provides quantitative image assessment in numerous academic studies.

For students
We are growing rapidly and are always looking for new software or deep learning engineers so we can develop new products and improve upon current software. If you are interested, check out our website (https://thirona.eu/) and look us up on Twitter (@ThisIsThirona) and LinkedIn for more news and the latest updates. Our open vacancies can be seen here.

We currently have two available student projects:

Creation of AI pipelines

At Thirona, we use a web-based platform to analyse all medical scans in our image analysis service. This platform makes use so called “AI pipelines” to process different scans in different ways, depending on their origin. In this project, you are responsible for identifying and proposing a better solution and interface to our existing AI pipeline creation tool (Django & front-end development). Next to the interface, the integration and validation of pipelines should be improved.

Dashboard & case prioritization.

At Thirona, we use a web-based platform to analyse all medical scans in our image analysis service. On a weekly basis, 100s of scans are analysed and in this project you will be responsible for creating and/or re-designing a dashboard and thereby visualizing the bottlenecks of our pipelines and triggering warnings for cases that need to be triaged for further analysis. This is a broad project that involves data analysis, implementation in Django and a modern frontend framework of your choice (depending on where your focus would be!).
